While I was at CES Unveiled, I managed to see a product that I probably would have missed on the showfloor called the Tri-Specs. Tri-Specs are Bluetooth wireless headphones for an MP3 Player or cellular phone that are in the form of sunglasses.

At the ends of the Tri-Specs are two retractable earbuds that the user can put in his or her ears, which automatically turn the Tri-Specs on when extended. The best part is that no one would ever know that you are wearing earbuds while you wear the Tri-Specs glasses. You could be listening to MP3s while you’re supposed to be listening to the human resources director talk about some needless thing. Unless they look closely, your supervisors would never know.

Considering that Bluetooth Stereo Headsets are definitely going to be the way people are going in a wireless age, then I applaud Philips for trying to get ahead of this game with the SHB 7110, or Tapster.

Not only can the Tapster sync with the user’s MP3 Player or smartphone, but it has some very unique touch-sensitive controls. I can only assume that this is why it is called the Tapster, because the controls are all done by tapping or some touches.

For example, if you want to adjust the volume, just do a single finger swipe along the ear. Also, if you are switching from music to taking a phone call, all you need to do is tap yourself on the ear.

Every once in a while, some new concept comes out that is actually a good idea. We have been seeing a lot of wrist watches that can act as mobile phones lately, but I think we are just creating those to fulfill some vintage Dick Tracy fantasy. This is one concept wrist phone device that won’t require you to talk to your wrist.

The On Time Headset System is a bracelet that comes with a pop-out wireless headset. I suppose that is a better place to put your Bluetooth headset than your pocket.

The bracelet has a secondary display, so if your headset rings, you can just look down and see who is calling. I would imagine that the bracelet display can show the time, making it a very fancy wristwatch.

Snooper helps find your lost dog

On Christmas Day, I had a dog disappear on us, prompting me to spend most of my holiday putting up “have you seen this dog?” notices all over the neighborhood. I miss the age of the jukebox. I’m not old enough to remember the days when a real Fonz would hit a juke to play tunes that we now call oldies, but I do remember seeing jukeboxes in pizza parlors in the seventies and eighties. They were slowly dying out by that time, and so they had a Bauhaus form-follows-function look to them. They never regained that look from the jukes of that bygone era.

Sanyo ALBO is retro-futuristic digital picture frame

I can’t help but think that Sanyo’s newest digital phone frame, the ALBO, sounds like a major brand of dog food. As far as I know, ALBO isn’t a fancy acronym for something, but it is one of the coolest digital picture frames that I have ever seen. Considering that there is currently a huge market for digital picture frames now, that is saying something.

The seven-inch LCD frame has one of the most interesting designs, straight out of a science-fiction TV show’s prediction of what television would look like in the future. Just look at the design, and that last sentence will make sense.

As you can see from the photo, it is possible to turn the screen on a swivel for various formats. You can see them in slideshow format with a quick turn, and the photo frame has some other features and effects.

The USB 3-in-1 Rota-Rota Combo Hub with thermometers

If you’re in serious need of some extra hubs, this is packed full of them. It also has a couple of extra features, such as a thermometer. I’m not really sure why you’d need a thermometer to tell you the temperature of the room you’re already in, but it has one. It tells both Celsius and Fahrenheit one on each of the dials on the front of the hub. It’d be nice if they added a clock, or pretty much anything besides a thermometer. On the plus side when your boss keeps the office too cold or hot, you can tell them the accurate temperature within your complaint about the room temperature.

This would be a great hub to travel with, that is if you’re into teddy bears. I will probably never understand the trend with cuddly stuffed and teddy bear shaped hubs and USB drives. The Iron Radio Alarm Clock works as portable iPod speaker

This is one combination of gadgetry that is a little bit surprising. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t really ever expect to see a iPod speaker in the shape of an iron. It’d make wandering about with your favorite music a little more eye catching. Although most people anymore try to keep their look of shock over odd articles of clothing fairly secretive, I’m not sure they could with this around. Plus if you have any young kids, I imagine they’d take off with this to go add it to their toy kitchen set.

You can go for headphones, but if someone else is trying to listen it gets obnoxious to share headphones. The Good and the Bad of the New iPod Shuffle

In case you haven’t heard, the new iPod Shuffle is out. The boys at Apple have given the Shuffle a makeover, and it is both good and bad.

The good news is that it now has 4GB worth of memory on it. It is also smaller, measuring just 1.8 inches tall and 0.7 inches wide.

Another new feature is the VoiceOver, which will tell the user the name of the current track and also when it is time to recharge the battery. The VoiceOver feature allows the user to operate multiple playlists, as they can be navigated as the player announces their names.

All the buttons have been taken off of it, and placed conveniently on the headphones. Even though Apple thought this was going to be the good news, many tech blogs everywhere have been criticizing this feature as extremely bad news.

Sometimes we come across gadgets that really get us excited! However after we read the specs of said gadgets more closely our little gadget balloons get deflated. Case in point, the Pet's Eye View Digital Camera. This compact digital camera attaches to your your pet's collar and is made of ultra durable water-resistant ABS plastic. Photos are shot at 640x480 resolution at intervals of either 1, 5, or 15 minutes. Sounds great, so what's the catch? According to the product description there's only enough internal memory to hold roughly 35 photos, which means at best you're only going to capture a little over eight hours in the life of your pet before you'll run out of space. touchArcade reports that the new 2nd Generation Apple iPod Touch has the fastest 3D rendering performance of all devices in its class, making it even faster than the new iPhone 3G in this regard:

The most clear difference is that fact that the iPod Touch’s processor was quietly boosted to 532MHz (up from 412MHz) with the 2nd generation model introduced in September. Meanwhile, the iPhone 3G, Original iPhone and 1st Generation iPod Touch continue to run at the original 412MHz. Though not the intended purpose, this video from Handheld Games Corp shows that the app load time of the 2nd Generation iPod Touch is notably faster than the 1st Generation model.
It seems that there are additional factors, however, as there are performance differences even found between the models that run at the same speed. The models rank in the following order (fastest to slowest) for 3D rendering, with the 2nd Generation iPod Touch being the fastest “by far”.

We love Apple's discreet way of introducing products that offer enhanced functionality like gaming without shouting "Hey look now it does this too!" from the rooftops. The new Touch is easily our favorite gadget of the year so far - with the ability to check email, browse the web, play games, view photos, listen to music and watch videos AND run cool apps we're as happy as we can be!

Beats Tour Review – The Mobile Monster 'Beats by Dr. Dre'

A surprising number of people seems happy to spend a relative fortune on a shiny new music player, only to listen with the headphones supplied in the box – a box, mind you, which was usually designed in California, made in China, and is arguably more sophisticated than the earbuds inside.

Slight exaggeration, OK, but seriously: Plugging your ears with the cheapo headphones that Apple, Creative and others throw in for good measure when they sell their digital pocket entertainers is like buying a $3,000 camera and taking pictures with a $50 lens – you just don't get the results that your expensive toy can deliver.

Despite the armies of white-corded iPod lovers, there is, of course, a vibrant market for third-party headphones trying to bring out the best in your MP3 player, cell phone or iGizmo of choice. So far, companies like Shure, Sennheiser, Sony, and Bose have dominated this segment – but it may be time to add a Monster to the list.

The Californian Hi-Fi cable giant first made a splash with its Beats by Dr. Dre noise-cancelling headphones , developed with input from producer Dr. Dre. But the "Beats," impressive as they are, not only cost a relative fortune – retailing for $349 in the U.S. and close to 400 euros in Europe – they are also quite big, heavy, and a bit too clumsy for life on-the-go.

So here come the "Beats" etc. "Tour" edition, meaning the mobile version of Dr. Dre's Monster cooperation – much cheaper, if still pricey, at $149 in the U.S., as well as much smaller and lighter, since they fit in the ear canal rather than encasing the ear. The first thing you (and anybody within a mile around you) will notice is the flashy red cable – take that, Apple! And perhaps: Take that, robbers of the world, if you happen to venture into certain areas of certain cities...

The second thing you'll notice once you fit these mini Monsters snugly into your ears is that they deliver a very grown up sound. The bass is solid and crisp, drums kick in with a lot of energy, and whatever soundgarden you may be wandering in, you will likely find the musical landscape rich, colorful and wide open.

On the down side, the Monster buds occasionally seemed a bit harsh and metallic sounding to me, especially in the upper frequencies. Also, no matter which type of music I let them play with, the "Beats Tour" never quite managed to reach the level of sophistication that made me a fan of their bigger brothers, the over-the-ear "Beats."

To be fair, tiny earbuds with their tiny drivers (i.e. speakers) face big challenges in delivering big sound, and overall the mini Monsters left me impressed with their performance. It's important, though, to find the right fit – which should be no problem with the provided set of different ear pieces. In my experience, once you've figured out which size and shape works best for your ears, the "Beats Tour" are comfortable to wear for hours and stay in place without feeling too tight.

The bright red cable is not just eye-popping but practical, too, as it features a new, flat design – patent pending, according to Monster – which doesn't easily tangle. So you won't have to spend the equivalent length of a Pink Floyd anthem trying to unravel the mess the cord is in each time you pull the headphones out of your pocket.

It's a shame, though, that Monster decided not to give the "Beats Tour" a microphone by default. The manual already hints at a "Beats Talk" version of the mini Monsters featuring an "iSoniTalk" cable with a microphone and a call answer button, turning the earphones into a mobile headset. That would be exactly what the doctor ordered for pleasant listening and communicating on-the-go, of course, but at this point (early 2009) Monster could not provide Übergizmo with either a release date or a price, saying only that the "Beats Talk" would cost more than the "Beats Tour."

Also, the mini Monsters do not provide active noise cancellation. They merely shield you from roaring airplane engines, screaming children, and boom boxes on wheels simply by sitting in the ear canal like earplugs. In my personal litmus test they pretty efficiently silenced both my rumbling dishwasher and my noisy upstairs neighbor. (Quite a feat.)

Still, if you're looking for true silence you may want to consider actual noise-cancelling headphones instead, which exist in earbud size as well.

Equally important, like any in-ear headphones these minis actually create noise whenever you touch the cord – moving your head may be enough. The moment the cable scrapes against your jacket, you'll hear it. Unless, of course, you make AC/DC and Dr. Dre blare loud enough to wake up your neighbors on the bus and kill your ear drums. Not recommended.

Similarly, you can hear every step you take when you walk while wearing earbuds like these. The unwanted effect is, of course, explained by in-ear headphones being a kind of earplug, except they also play music. How sensitive you are to this effect, and whether you are able to live with it, is very much a matter of personal taste.

Naturally, the beauty of sound, too, is in the ears of the beholder. Meaning much of what I said above is highly subjective. If you consider buying the mini Monsters, or any other pair of headphones, be sure to try them out before you buy – or make sure you can return them if they don't please your inner musician.

One thing seems certain, though: There are worse investment opportunities these days than spending $150 on the "Beats Tour" – very able little earbuds that are a worthy companion for any music player that's been itching to show what music it can really deliver, if only given a chance to go beyond the original headphones that have been boxing it in.

LG Renoir - Hands On

[CES 2009] The LG Renoir was launched in December in Europe and when asked, the LG representatives at the booth told us that they have information about this phone coming to the US. The most interesting feature of this Smartphone is the 8 Megapixel Touch Shot camera equipped with a protected Schneider-Kreuznach optics. First I had to open the lens cover (see photos in the gallery) to start the camera. I tried the face tracking features that allows to get a focus on a face by tracking it with your finger on the touch screen, when you get a lock (like in video games!) you just have to press on the display to snap a picture. I found the Touch Shot somewhat difficult, it shook the camera a bit each time.

The video mode has slow and fast motion, and it is pretty fun to use (see photos). The sound quality is powered by Dolby Mobile and it is supposed to be excellent, we had an on stage demo of it sounded very good to me. I liked the virtual keyboard, I prefer to use it in landscape mode / qwerty, in comparison to others I tested this one is better. The rest of the user interface is well designed and well organized, I did not try everything though. Other features include A-GPS, Geo-tagging, WiFi. I would love to get the Renoir (KC910) to live blog on the go, my BlackBerry's (the old Curve) camera is crappy in comparison. Dear LG, could you please bring the Renoir to the US? Or should I ask the carriers nicely?

Samsung Show W7900 Unveiled Officially

Samsung has officially unveiled its Show W7900 cell phone that will feature Texas Instruments' integrated DLP Pico technology. For folks living across the pond, the Show W7900 is also known as the i7410, and both models will come with the built-in chipset and compact projector which is able to throw an image from the handset to a screen or wall at up to 50" in size, although don't expect this to work great outdoors or under bright light conditions as it will probably perform in a similar manner as that of earlier generation projectors. Other features shared by both handsets include :-

NVIDIA Builds a $99 Mobile Internet Device Platform

[Mobile World Congress] Mobile internet devices (or MIDs) have not had the success that Netbooks have enjoyed. It might be because they are in an awkward category: too small to be a laptop and too big to be a PDA/Smartphone. NVIDIA thinks that it can help the MID category by giving it more (graphics) muscle, while lowering the price and the overall power consumption to boost the battery life from “hours to days”. (btw, Intel claims a similar power efficiency improvement for its Moorestown platform). The Tegra 600 Series (Launched at the last Computex) is the chip of choice: it runs at 650 to 750Mhz and can decode 1080p video or encode 720p video in real-time. Not bad for a handheld device, no? MIDs built on this platform are expected to run on Windows CE (wait, did you say CE?!) at the moment, but we wonder how long it will take to have Android up and running (see today's NVIDIA/Android announcement)

LG Goes 3G on Cellular Phone Watch

The LG-GD910 is a watch that is a 3G-enabled mobile phone. It has a 1.4-inch touchscreen, and is about 0.6 inches thick. I figured that a cellular phone on your wrist might be a little large, because I’ve tried out MP4 watches that tend to feel like a brick on the wrist.

The cellular watch phone also features a video conferencing, so you can talk into your watch to the person on the screen, like Dick Tracy or Electro-woman. I realize that many of you might not have understood that last reference, but Electro-woman and Dyna-Girl was a kid’s show with two superhero ladies whose powers were in their oversized wrist bracelets.

This USB drive fits snugly into the case, where no one will look for it. In fact, that is one thing I like about this watch: it doesn’t look like heavily advanced spy watch. No, this watch looks completely innocuous with its fancy exterior.

The USB Hidden Flash Drive Watch has “a plastic case covered by a stainless steel mask with brushed silver finish and convex mineral glass with a shiny raised index”. It may not be a Rolex, but it is fancy enough for James Bond to sport.

I can just see it being used in the next James Bond film. Here’s the scene: Daniel Craig sneaks into an enemy base, and then whips out the flash drive from his wrist and downloads the head bad guy’s plan. Knowing movies like I do, they’ll probably make it more suspenseful by showing a little bar that has to be 100% complete before a guard shows up to stop Bond.

So before Bond goes out on his next mission, he doesn’t need Q anymore. He can just order from the ThinkGeek site. That’s probably good, because the latest James Bond films don’t have Q in them anyway.

Skullcandy’s Wooden Earbuds

I always highly appreciate Skullcandy’s variety of color choices when it comes to their earbuds. Granted, I still bought the black pair of earbuds, but I still like that I had the option to go for lime green or pink. Well now Skullcandy has created a different style of earbuds, this time in wood-grain. Making them one of the many to join in on the wood technology trend, which I will never understand no matter how hard I try.

They claim to be eco-friendly, which is always a major bonus. It also features a braided foil cord and a 3.5mm gold-plated plug. From the looks of things you’ll only be finding these online, and won’t find them in your local electronics store. Unfortunately, like most wood-grain products, this one is far more expensive than the normal pair of earbuds. You’ll end up paying $99.99 on Urban Outfitters for one pair of these. Frankly, that seems like a bit much for Skullcandy earbuds, but if you have a love for wood electronics, then you’re probably used to dishing out the extra cash.

Surround Xi

Surround Xi is a little speaker tube with a USB port, which plays any MP3 or DRM-free WMA tracks you plug into it. It works with USB drives and iPods, and is most suited to thumbdrives, first-gen Shuffles and other miniature players that can simply be jammed in and left there.

The stereo speakers are not entirely horrible, providing clear but bloodless audio so long as they're not turned up too high. It's also cute, with pleasant metallic paint and, with four AAA batteries, cordless operation (a wall-wart is supplied). Standard Duracells lasted for about 4-5 hours.

With an eBay price of $15 (Makers Rapha says it can be found at Kmart and Target, but neither store has it on their websites) it's flaws and limitations can be forgiven, if not omitted. Some MP3 tracks play in slow motion. It turns itself off when inverted or held at weird angles. It has an auxiliary input, but no headphone socket: this is a particular shame, as that would have made it a $15 USB adapter for any stereo system.

It does just one thing and it does it just O.K. That's enough, in this day and age, to earn just a little praise.

Eos Multi-Room Audio System Gives You a Syncing Feeling

Getting a multi-room sound system and an iPod to play nice isn't always easy. Despite the number of workarounds, the end result is almost always the same: a mess of wires and audio that goes from slightly askew to horridly unbalanced when you move from the living room to the kitchen. Believe it or not, the solution isn't that complex. All manufacturers need to do is ditch the wires without forsaking audio quality, and add a system for balancing volume between the speakers.

By the numbers, Eos' 100T1RB Wireless Audio System is what any wire entangled apartment needs. The relatively small system consists of a base station with an iPod/iPhone dock, an auxiliary out port, and satellite speakers capable of wirelessly syncing to the base. Although my "core" system came with four satellite speakers, the 100T1RB's audio driver is calibrated for 2.1 sound, so it didn't exactly mimic true surround sound like I had hoped for. But with its small satellites and low profile base, it proved to be one of the more discreet multi-room systems I've used.

Wireless setups like this often come with a host of connectivity headaches, but the 100T1RB was surprisingly simple. I literally plugged everything in, connected my iPod and cranked up my favorite playlist. (Ghostface Killah, what?!) That was it. No initialization, syncing, encryption or frustrated swearing necessary. The consumer in me attributed this to the magical audio elves, but the gadget hound in me had to do some investigating. It turns out that Eos has outfitted the unit with proprietary tech that allows it to hop frequencies within the 2.4GHz band. Without getting too complicated, the system works like a charm. Even in an apartment with a half dozen computers, a cordless phone, and bevy of other gadgets clogging the 2.4GHz band, the 100T1RB was able to stream audio smoothly at 48KHz to all the satellites.

Distributing the satellites throughout my apartment was a cinch too. With their removable power supplies, I had the option of plugging the speakers in the old fashioned way, or removing them and plugging the speakers directly into wall outlets. This made bumping tunes in odd places like the bathroom easy enough, but some truly wireless lithium-ion love would've been appreciated. Especially since all of my wall sockets are at ankle height. Being able to tweak the volume of individual speakers proved to be a trade off for this setback, since I was able to crank up the lower speakers to compensate for their odd positioning.

Of course, there's a little bit of sour to go with all this sweetness. Eos definitely did a bang up job on connectivity, but the audio quality of the individual speakers could use some work. Both the base unit and the satellites are equipped with subwoofers, but overall the bass output isn't the stuff of earthquakes. Paired with some of the gain I received at higher volumes, it's safe to say that this isn't the end-all-be-all for multi-room audio. Still, in terms of price and ease the 100T1RB is well suited for the no-fuss multi-room novice. —Terrence Russell

Fantastic range -- even in multi story settings. Rejoice, iFanatics — it charges devices while docked. Ships with remote and a ton of iPod dock adapters.

TIRED Rechargeable battery powered satellites would've been nice. Audio quality doesn't hold a candle to wireless systems from Bose, Altec. 2.1 stereo driver is great for music, but stunts home theater possibilities. Buttons on base station feel flimsy.

4th Gen iPod Nano — We Want Our Square Form Factor Back!

Here's a hard truth: Even if Apple decided to carve its new Nano out of petrified poo and bless it with a Braille display, the interface alone would still make Cupertino's latest flash-based music player leagues better than the competition. So what's our opinion of the new Nano? Well, it's just like the old Nano, just a little roomier (fine) and shaped like an airfoil (weird). This new aerodynamic form doesn't seem to have any discernible functional purpose, but the Triscuit-shaped Nano had some distinct advantages over this new 4th gen model: It was a better piece of fitness gear, fitting more comfortably into sporty armbands and the tiny pockets so common to the backs of running shorts. The old screen orientation also allowed you to control video content more intuitively, though the new elongated shape is better for navigating long playlists. Sure, that’s a decent upgrade—as is the price-to-gig ratio—but unless you absolutely need to shake-to-shuffle (spazz) or will be building an airplane out of iPods (paging Mr. Branson), the best thing about the new Nano is how flooded eBay’s gonna be with cast-off 3rd gen models. —Joe Brown

It's usually easy to deride products that are honored as Best of Innovations at CES because the awards are announced a full month before the event begins and before most experts have had a chance to check them out.

Also, the best products are always kept under wraps until they're announced at the event itself, leaving the premature 'Best of' list in the dust.

But this year, for a change, it looks like we might have some keepers.

iLuv's $200 iNT170 Internet Radio won the best portable gadgets category award and its attractive design and easy compatibility make it an attractive option. The iLuv iNT170 is Wi-Fi enabled, has an Ethernet port, and provides access to hundreds of internet (and FM) radio stations, 40 of which you can preset on the dock.

But on the surface, the best thing about it seems to be its low power consumption (at 15 watts), which would allow you to leave it on all day and not worry about a detrimental effect on your wallet or green initiatives.

In 2006, iLuv was one of the first companies to come out with a small iPod dock that allowed a user to record TV programs directly from the display set. That iLuv dock took in the input from a variety of sources and converted into MPEG-4s after pre-selecting for length. It wasn't a huge seller but received some good marks, which bodes well for the follow-up iNT170.

The other gadget we're into is the Psyko 5.1 gaming headphones, which 'won' the best design and engineering award for headphones. The headsets come with a 5.1 surround sound and promise to have zero latency, since they come without the crap digital processing that usually gets in the way of easy listening.

According to the manufacturer, these also come with precision directional audio that realistically positions a player within the audio space of a game. This means it could allow a player to react faster to a nearby blown shell in a shooting game and hear it a moment before another player. Sounds tricky, so expect for us to try this out soon to make sure the claims are accurate.

In the meantime, we'll have play through Gears of War 2 through the glitchy in-speakers of our crappy and old-timey (1995) Toshiba TV.

Rumor: Zune Phone Is Coming to CES 2009

After years of rumors and brusque denials, it appears the Zune phone is the real deal.

According to Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will announce a Zune-style mobile device during his keynote address at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, on January 7, 2009.

In an article in Barron's, Chowdhry claims that the company's new centerpiece will combine the best features of the Zune media player with the hardware design of Danger's mobile Sidekick, in addition to "motion enhancement features," like an accelerometer.

Basically, this means the device will come with a physical keyboard like HTC's G1 and will likely feature a larger screen to accommodate heavy multimedia elements. And since we're all here copying each other's mobile phone features, we'll be shocked if the Zune phone doesn't feature multitouch capabilities.

This report seems to confirm an earlier one revealing that Microsoft was working on a phone code-named "Pink."

It's a long way from Ballmer's original statement in April 2007 regarding the iPhone: "It's not a concept you'll ever get from us. We're in the Windows Mobile business."

In fact, this was always the excuse Microsoft gave as to why it couldn't build a phone -– its WinMo business was too successful and it couldn't afford to cannibalize the market. This year, Microsoft's WinMo profits are expected to be near $300 million in revenue.

Sprint introduces touch-screen phone

Sprint Nextel Corp. announced Wednesday it is jumping on the bandwagon with the Touch by HTC. Like Apple Inc.'s iPhone, this smart phone has only a few buttons and is designed to be controlled by touching the screen.
The announcement makes Sprint the third of the three largest U.S. wireless carriers to introduce a cell phone with a large touch screen designed to be controlled with fingers rather than a stylus. The iPhone, which launched this summer, is exclusive to AT&T Inc. Verizon Wireless said two weeks ago that it would introduce the LG Voyager in time for Thanksgiving.

The Voyager has a large touch screen, but differs from the iPhone in that it folds out to reveal a hardware keyboard. The HTC Touch lacks a keyboard, but it still has a stylus. A version has been on sale in Europe since this summer.

The Touch runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 software, which exists in two versions: one that's controlled by a stylus, and another that's controlled by a keypad on a non-touch screen phone. HTC, a Taiwanese company, has modified the stylus-oriented version of the software to make it more usable with fingers alone.

Beyond the touch-screen interface, the Touch's similarities with the iPhone are not overwhelming. It doesn't have a large amount of built-in flash memory for music and movies, relying instead on expansion cards. It's smaller and lighter, with a screen measuring 2.8 inches diagonally compared with the iPhone's 3.5 inches.

The Touch uses Sprint's relatively fast data network, rather than the iPhone's combination of a relatively slow AT&T network supplemented by Wi-Fi. The European Touch's Wi-Fi capability did not make it into Sprint's version.

The name could cause some confusion among shoppers: Apple just introduced the iPod Touch, which is basically an iPhone without cell phone capabilities.

Philips Releases New Lineup of Tiny MP3 Players

Following up on the small and simple design pledge we heard last week from Philips, the company today released a couple of MP3 players small enough for stocking stuffing.

But is the audio quality good enough to take attention away from more popular tiny music players, like the iPod Shuffle? After a few hours playing with one of these bad boys, the GoGear Spark, my first thought is that it's not a bad alternative due to the OK audio. It's certainly cheaper and surprisingly tough. As for the other players, they each have their own thing going on.

The Spark (at right) comes with a nice 1.5-inch OLED display, options at 2GB-4GB (for $50-$60, which is less per gig than the shuffle), and uses Philips FullSound EQ tech for improved sounds.

I put it through a jazzy-rock-rap play list, and the beats had a surprising amount of depth. But the feature that I liked best was that the screen is used for navigation (as a giant button, not a regular touchscreen), and clicking through the songs is pretty satisfying. Without any external buttons, the screen takes up most of the tiny space.

The other one of interest is the GoGear LUXE player. It has the transparent color LCD-style that we saw a couple of years ago from a Sony music player that shall remain nameless. This one, though, is refined and sparkly (see above). It also comes with FullSound, which means that a music output is refined by "performing 10 million operations per second to analyze and re-compute the music signal." The key feature, though, is the ability to sync it with any phone to make a switch to incoming calls (it has a clip-on Bluetooth mic), without losing your place in a beat or without removing your headphones. I've yet to test this one.

The LUXE will be available at 2GB and 4GB, at $90 and $100, respectively, when it's released in January.

Lest we forget, there's one last player, the Raga. Basically, it is a sporty, straight mash-up of the 2004 iPod Minis, in an iPod shuffle body and isn't notable by any means. So the one thing it should have going on is a lot of insecurity compared to the others. The company, however, will market some armbands and other accessories to go with it.

Blaupunkt and miRoamer Unveil Internet Radio for the Car

Blaupunkt and miRoamer will announce a partnership at CES that will put internet radio into car dashboards for the first time. Blaupunkt prototypes pictured here show the technology in action.

"miRoamer's development with Blaupunkt is the first seamless Internet radio solution," said miRoamer founder and CEO George Parthimos. "With the simple push of a button, users can access AM/FM stations or Internet radio's thousands of music, entertainment, news and talk stations from around the world, all from the same car stereo."

MiRoamer dipped its toe in these waters last year, but the requisite hardware deals apparently didn't materialize. Now that Blaupunkt and miRoamer have formed a partnership, we could see in-car internet radio enter the mainstream.

"The first model will connect to a 3G/HSDPA/HSPA device via Bluetooth for Internet connectivity," explained miRoamer spokesman Ryan Greives. "When connecting to the Internet via an external device (such as an iPhone), the customer’s existing mobile service provider is the default network," adding, "various models are in the pipeline which may have an internal modem."

Neonode N2 Ultra Compact Touch Screen Phone

The Neonode N2 is an ultra compact touchscreen phone with weights only 70 grams, it comes with a 2.0″ 176×220

pixel display, 2 megapixel camera, miniSD memory expansion, a multimedia player capable of playing back MP3, AAC and WAV audio plus MPEG4 and WMV video files plus Bluetooth. The N2 is a quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 device.

Neonode N2 have create an open and extensible operating system on the N2, so users can develop their own applications and the phone software can be upgraded as necessary. But not sure if this is a custom operating system or not, but the Neonode N1 already run a version of Windows.

Other interesting feature at Neonode N2 is called WRR “Web Radio Recorder“. It allows you to download tracks from internet radio stations to play back later, and records only music and strips out the speech, and presumably ads. It’s a good deal for consumers but probably not a good for the radio station. To use WRR, you need to connect the N2 up to a PC running the WRR client.

N2 has what Neonode call an “optical grid” of light emitters and sensors. This is the same approach taken with the Neonode N1. Neonode themselves make a passing reference to the Apple iPhone when talking about the product and say that Apple and “other manufacturers can see the benefits of the concept and are now following the lead set by Neonode”.

Digital Camera Cost

If you wanted a cheap camera in the past, you could only get something with weak quality optics. This isn't the case anymore. In most cases, however, $500 will buy you something very good.

Megapixels

LCD Display

Check the camera for the shooting modes that it offers. Some will only have presets, other will offer manual shooting as well. The cheap ones will be more basic, which is fine if you're an amateur.

The Storage Medium
The problem here is that manufacturers don't stick to a single type of storage card. Check the specs of the camera, and see what type of card it can accept. This way if you already have a certain type of storage card, you can make sure that the digital camera accepts it.

After You Buy A Digital Camera

After you bought the digital camera, play with it for a bit, learn what it can do and practice taking better photos. It's a gadget like any other, and it can take a bit of time learning how to take the best photos you can. But, once you learn how to use it, the photos will be great and admired by everyone.
